I got some paper samples and some of my Origami friends wanted to know what I learned. Much too much info for putting on fBorg, so I am putting it here.
I did the same fold on all of the papers so that I could evaluate the creasy ness, and feel. All of the paper needed to be cut to squares. And the quantities are big.
First thing Uline is a great company. I have dealt with them for years. My order took 19 hours to arrive. But there are no small quantities. But the samples were free, but had creases in them
And their packing has lots of plastic, and a catalog.
This blog post is not intended as a promotion for them, but as a way of sharing what I learned about these different papers.
50 lb Black Kraft Paper - 48" x 720'
This is some of the nicest Kraft paper available. It took creases cleanly. Note how nicely the tail folded. It kept a curve and the box on the back of the crane popped out nicely. I think this may be the same Kraft paper found at PaperTree in San Francisco and Riley Street in Santa Rosa . I will be getting a roll of this. I may have plenty left over for my heirs.
Kraft Paper Rolls
This is a basic good quality kraft roll. It comes 30-75 pound. The sample I got is 30#. Folds well, crisp edges. Nice feel to the paper. It comes up to 60" wide, so I may use this when I venture into oversize pieces.
30 lb Virgin Kraft Paper - 36" x 1,200'
This is a nicer paper, good feel, but very limited in size and weight. Probably not for me
Insulated Foil WrapsThis is what your hamburger comes wrapped in. I'm in love with this paper. but it only comes in precut pieces. but it folds like a dream. Note how nicely the wing curled. I'm not sure I need a thousand sheets. Maybe I will find a burger joint to see if I can buy some off of them.
Parchment Paper, Quinlon
They did send me a sample of this. I immediately used it on a project. It was so nice. but it only comes in 16x24. Which is neither a roll nor a square. They did not send a sample of the silicon paper, which does come in a roll, so I am going to have to ask them about the differences.
Bogus Paper
I didn't even fold this. This is a recycled paper and rough, really rough. So my hands did not want to get sanded. But it is recycled paper, and comes in several widths and weights
